While writing the screenplay, Lindqvist cut out Tommy, an older boy living in the building with his mother, who is in a relationship with a police investigator. In addition to Oskar, his mother, Eli, and her “father” Hakan, there is a collection of drinking buddies who all live in the area, Oskar’s bullies, and the foreign man who teaches Oskar PE. ![]() One of the most striking aspects of the novel is the sheer number of characters. The book was a bestseller in Sweden, and after being approached by a producer and a director, Lindqvist penned the screenplay for the 2008 film adaptation.
